THIS STRING MAY BE PREMATURE.

There is no way until the respective chips are released to actually compare them. Though the comparison charts are similar the actual performance can be vastly different. Historically, however Cyrix is given to considerable overstatement of performance while AMD has generally been much more conservative.

I recall an incident several years ago when my company supplied a 486 Cyrix chip powered system to a client. The client then ran math intensive benchmarks (matrix inversions and floating point operations) with very disappointing results. When an AMD chip was substituted, performance improved as much as five fold to a level comparable to or better than the iNTEL standard.

Though I know nothing first hand, I have heard similar criticisms of the current Cyrix 686; that is, that it relatively lethargic on math intensive operations. This may well be a devastating flaw of the M2; or it may not be. We should know after it is released.

Another important issue is production and marketing capability. Cyrix is fabless while AMD's production potential is strong and becoming stronger. Though AMD shot themselves in the foot with their K5 disasters, they are rebuilding their credibility with PC manufacturers; I do not believe that Cyrix enjoys the same level of credibity with their customers.

There may be heat dissipation problems with the M2. We will not know until it is released. AMD's MMX is an iNTEL liscensed standard while that of Cyrix is backwards engineered an may be anything from a disaster to superior. We may only know after it is relaeased.

If anyone has any insights into these issues PLEASE respond to this missive. Even you pAUL.

Best regards,

DRBES
