As mentioned, the F8 button works both in Windows 95 and Windows 98, and it brings up the boot menu. (Should be pressed right before the blue flash screen starts).

It will allow you to choose which way you want to start Windows. If you chose Safe Mode, it will start Windows without loading all the specific drivers and programs that are normally loaded. It's a good troubleshooting mode. However, if you had corrupted some system files, chances are that you Windows wouldn't boot normally, or would prompt you right off the bat with what was wrong.

Small little problems are normally the most difficult ones to solve. Often takes longer to track the little gremlins down :)
