Report: Germany Took Jews' Gold
BONN, Germany (AP) - Germany's Foreign Ministry said Friday it is looking into a magazine report that the postwar government took possession of gold stolen from Jews by the Nazis during World War II.
The weekly Der Spiegel magazine cited ministry files in its report.
During the war, German diplomats and secret agents used the gold to finance activity in Turkey, the report said, alleging that most of it came from the Nazi foreign ministry and had been stolen from Jews in the occupied war zones.
After Germany and Turkey severed relations in 1944, 12 gold bars and 12,799 gold coins remained stored in the German embassy in Ankara, Der Spiegel said.
In 1961, the gold was flown to Germany, the magazine said. Private gold was turned over to former civil servants or their heirs, but the embassy's own stash was deposited in Germany's central bank, the Bundesbank, the magazine said. No breakdown was given.
The ministry said it is investigating the report. dailynews.yahoo.com
Now, my question, What better way to pay off this debt than to make the world decide gold is worthless, pay off in $, allow gold to move back up? |
