Digicam CCD Prices:

For those Iomaniacs who doubt that Digicams will remain expensive because of costs involved, look here. Some of the new 2.3 Megapixel Digicams use the following CCD chip:

photo.askey.net
Product no. MN39570
* Shipment October 1998
* 2,310K square pixels (2.3 Megapixels)
* 1/2" size (14.0 mm x 12.4 mm)
* 4.2µm x 4.2µm pixel size
* 3:2 Aspect ratio
* Bayer RGB filter pattern
* Interlaced scan
* 30 fps low resolution output for LCD display
* Sensitivity (F8, 1/7.5s) of 480mV
* Saturation output of 600mV
* Proposed price 30,000 YEN ($264 per piece - in quantities unspecified)

As you can see, $264 will buy JUST the imaging CCD chip. Now you see it isn't because of storage that digicams are expensive. And the fact that old models are retired to make room for the new models means keeping the price points intact. The $799 price point has held quite well for a long time. Just look at the new Nikon Coolpix950 at the above page. Same price point. More and better features. The Coolpix 900 model that is being replaced has been completely sold out for weeks already.

A Flop!-equipped camera would havce to add another $100 or so for the OEM Flop! drive (assuming Iomega's price prediction holds, and not to mention development costs, software costs, etc on the part of the camera maker). Flash cards cost camera makers as little as $15 or so for 4MB Smartmedia. Camera makers will do anything to keep costs for these things down and price points intact. And shipping them with Flashcards is an easy way to keep costs low. Shipping digicams with a Flop! drive built in would only RAISE the cost of the camera-- a big No-No for digicam makers.
