My absolute favorite Italian painters tend to be on the early Renaissance side, probably the one I love best is Mantegna. When I studied his work first time about 20 years ago, my impression was that he was not considered to be very high up in the Pantheon, I have not read enough lately to know whether his stature has been elevated since then.

My favorite work of his happens to be in the big museum in Milan, "Dead Christ." I thought it was a truly radical work and incredibly forward looking. I have never seen it in person though, as I have never been able to get to Milan during my Italy trips and I don't know if it has been shown anywhere else. I'm certain you've seen it, and I envy you.

As you might note, both Mantegna and Vermeer (though centuries apart) were both masters of working with light and conveying effects based upon light and shade.
