Did PC sales actually contract in 1998? I think what you mean is that the growth rate slackened. I believe that PC sales did increase in 1998. Furthermore I don't see any reason to believe that PC sales will stop growing.

While it is true that growth in the low end has been stronger than overall growth, I don't see how that is a big problem for Dell. The Dell buyer tends to be a more sophisticated computer user who is looking for a higher performance, better quality system, as opposed to a first-time buyer who is concerned only with price.
