>Hey Yang...If China is so wonderful what you still doing here?
First of all, where I choose to live and work is my business. Secondly, none is saying that China has more democracy and freedom than US does or China is more developed economically then US. Most people recognized that China is developing very fast and therefore has a lot of business opportunities for US companies who want to make some profit.
Although percentage wise, Chinese own much fewer PC's, but China has 1.2 billion population. The number of internet users doubled to 1.1 million in first six months of last year and almost doubled again by Feb. of this year (reaching 2.1 million). Dividing 2.1 million by 1.2 billion, one can see that the percentage is still very small. But the fact that they have 2.1 million users now and the fact that the number of users is growing that fast prove that the business opportunity is real.
Yes most Chinese can't afford internet access. Only those who lives in more developed eastern urban area can. There are about 1/3 of population concentrated in eastern area and about 20% (that's a little less than total US population) of total population live in more developed urban areas. Almost every families in these area have TVs. VCRs . If you ask a friend who traveled to these areas, they will tell you how many people are using cellular phones. (The number actually surprises myself.) The number of DVD users are also amazing. (Actually I don't have a DVD player and I don't see may friends here who have one.) These facts show that expensive products do have market in China.
>A significant part of the foreign investment may get up >and leave to go to cheaper labor less regulated more >totalitarian regimes and places like Burma and Turkistan >...for example.......
Look at this example. Taiwan used to make cheap cloths, etc for US market. When they become more developed and the labor cost increased (and during the same period, they become a true democratic society) , those cheap labor job left Taiwan went to places like the mainland. Did Taiwan's development stop ? NO. They are making more advanced goods like computer parts now. The same thing is happening China. As eastern coast develops, cheap labor job left the area (to Vietnam and western China), but it didn't stop the development of the eastern coast. These areas are making TVs, DVDs, cellular phones, computers parts and computers, etc. (China just recently started exporting computers and airplanes.)
