Derek,
Not only are there 1600 aplications that currently run native on Alpha,
but ANY aplication written for Intel chips will run in "translation"
mode at speeds highly competitive (many aplications run faster) than
Intel. The FX32! translator keeps getting better.
Server software is currently released by MSFT for DEC and Intel at the
same time. MSFT liscenses DEC's cluster technology to make NT world
class.
As for DEC's financial health, Mitsubishi and Samsung have nice size
bets that says it's fully recovered.
