>>I have also known several people whose jaz and zip drives failed and IOM told them "sorry". Considering the small percentage of failures (so they claimed), it would have been best if IOM replace them free of charge. These folks bought their Jaz and Zips several years ago, at prices higher at prevailing price. It would have been good public relations if IOM had replaced them.<<

How many companies replace products which are out of warranty and two or three years old? You mention your friend's Nokia phone, but was that fixed by Nokia or by the company from whom he gets his cellular service?

Iomega does replace out-of-warranty Zip drives which exhibit Click of Death symptoms. I think that's going beyond the call of duty. They don't replace every single drive that ever breaks, and there's no reason they should.

Your friend's Jaz disk is probably just fine, BTW, but you should find out what was wrong with the Jaz drive.

I had a Jaz drive fail at work. It wouldn't spin up when a disk was inserted. Iomega customer support replaced the drive at no charge, even though I had no proof of purchase. On their own initiative, they looked up the serial number and determined that the drive was less than a year old, and therefore still under warranty.
