Jing, some of the ILECs will undoubtedly accommodate your predictions, but many are already on their way, going from the drawing board stages to developing the next gen networks of their own.
Some of these mimic FTTN, in some ways, and they may, in fact, be deemed desirable by the cable companies themselves at some point.
They strikingly resemble the original switched digital video platforms of the past that have all but been abandoned, up until now. These wont go in overnight, but that has never been their claim or style.
The one architecture that stands out is their "Full Service Area Network," or FSAN, which employs passive optical network (PON) components, in tandem with ATM and IP delivery mechanisms. Other options will be made available, undoubtedly, to allow for PON delivery to the structure, if deemed necessary. Who knows? As price points change, that may even become a norm at some point, especially if advances continue with plastic optical fibers (POF) and the costs begin to converge...
