MP3 is a compression format for music. It isn't in the same category as RealAudio, which is a streaming media format. With MP3, you download the whole song, then play it. There are a couple of competing formats including one called something like ab2 from AT&T. The record companies are backing a third format. What the record companies don't like about mp3 is that it has no copyright controls. They would prefer a format that allows them to continue to collect royalties on music. Musicians seem to be split. Some welcome mp3, which gives startup bands an easy way to get their music to an audience. Others see it as destroying their livelihood.

There is, BTW, a player made by Diamond which allows mp3 songs to be downloaded from a computer and then played back with the walkman-like device. It's called Rio.
