15th February 1999 PHILIPS - CREATING A DIGITAL PRESENCE Philips is joining the DVB/DAVIC Interoperability Consortium, created in October 1998, strengthening the already influential group of manufacturers backing the standard. The founding members (Alcatel, COCOM, DiviCom, Hughes Network Systems, Nokia Multimedia Terminals, Sagem, Simac, Thomson Multimedia and its subsidiary Thomson Broadcast Systems) expressed their belief that wider offering of interoperable products for delivering video, voice and data over cable will create healthy competition and benefit the consumer. Philips is planning a comprehensive approach to digital and interactive cable with settop boxes and cable modems added to its existing network products, sold as components or as end-to-end solutions. MediaOne has selected Philips digital settops for one of its end-to-end digital trials in the USA - competing with GI equipment in the other trial. Both trials are using the OpenCable standard developed by Cable Labs. The US government requires digital settop boxes conforming to a consistent standard to be on retail sale by summer 2000. ©Copyright 1999 |
