God had given the children of Israel over to the Ninevites as a means of chastising them for their sins. From what I understand about the Ninevites they were extremely cruel to their captives and were feared like a plague. But Jonah feared that God was about to send mercy on his people's tormentors and so rebelled against the calling. The natural mind would say he was justified in his actions but that mind is constantly at emnity towards God and something we must continually war against. The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak.

But yes, this was the same attitude that had permeated the entire nation and as a result the world only saw the Israelites as high minded and conceited instead of bearers of God's precepts and ordinances to a lost and dying world like they should have been.
