It's not so much that the republicans "turned on immigrants", it's just the reality that this country will become a "madhouse" if we keep letting too many people in. Think of the strain on the environment, the highway system, water supplies, etc, etc, etc.
The "open door" policy was once a major positive force for this country when it was young and growing, but now, there are enough people around the world who want to come here that we would sink like an overloaded ship! (and still may) Yogi
