Remember the discussions about "systems on a chip" integration? I thought at the time IDT inked the agreement with IBM that because of their in-house graphics processor effort (defunct) and their high speed memories technologies that they could develop a systems on a chip part. Henry even laid out an architecture for such a development. IF IDT had been able to catch the window of opportunity with the WINChip and ramp up rapidly, they might have been able to fund multiple design efforts that would lead to an integrated chip.

Now Intel has said that they have been working on a new chip architecture that will incorporate a graphics processor and on-chip cache. National/Cyrix is expected to come out with their SOC sometime this year and AMD probably has something in the works as well. The market will evolve to even more complex and integrated designs over the next few years.

Bottom line is that IDT needs to get into gear or they may as well shut down the WINChip effort.
