There are several things pushing and pulling the yen/dollar. A large trade surplus gives dollars to the Japanese/Chinese which they can put in the US market or move elsewhere. Countries with large trade deficits usually have weak currencies -- ours is the exception because those foreigners with the bucks have been content to keep them parked here. Last week they decided to bring the bucks home, tonight they said they would bring them home at a slower rate than was implied last week to head off a steep rise in their interest rates and their yen -- both of which threatened to slow their economy. One last point, there are different players -- MOF wants low rates and cheap yen -- BOJ wants low inflation and no more bubbles. It is a tug of war.
