Various older machines are being shut down all the time (or being overhauled). The truth to the matter is the faster more efficient machines have displaced the older, slower, less efficient machines. Gone are some manufactures like Simpson Paper who exclusively owned only older machines. Although new ventures have kept some of these mills open, others have been shut.

As North American producers have been reluctant to expand in the '90s, the Europeans and Asians have been on a rampage. The danger is the North Americans will get passed by if they remain complacent. The recent drop in prices however are due in part to the flood of foreign paper hitting North American shores because of overcapacity overseas.
