Gap up at open is largely due to day-traders trying to fuel the price movements, and the day-traders like to have gap opens by "default". Trading for a living largely depend on a "up market" and therefore that's always their first choice.(consciously or un-consciously as a group)

If you have a small box position, gap up is a good way to day trade.
