It's hard not to acknowledge that there has been a clear victory in this thing. It could have turned out very differently. Had Clinton's poll numbers plunged and stayed low; in the 30's; the would have been finished. If all of it clunge to the Dem's; he would have been finished. They would have tossed him overboard. I don't think it was the economy though. I think even a recession would not have ended him. I think it was the peculiar nature of the enemies that saved him. Linda Tripp, Ken Starr, Newt, Paula Jones; they just didn't sell as credible. There were too many wrongs committed by them and they were too glaring and so they offset Clinton's wrong. The taping of Monica didn't sit well with most and to get the President on something that was in itself seen as a wrongdoing killed the argument that the Republican's stood for morals. When you listen to Linda Tripp talk about how her moral compass is different than Monica's; most people think that they would prefer Monica's moral compass to Linda Tripp's; so the whole morality thing doesn't sell. The Republican's are screwing themselves with this kind of thing. I talked to an elder in a church that Dan Qualye and C. Everett Koop were members and he was saying that it was a sin to him to present this kind of sex stuff in front of the whole nation. He said that he was taught that you would never present this kind of thing in front of the wife. Men would talk to the man in private about such a thing. This is how very conservative moral people view all of this. THEY didn't like how it was being handled. If you can win them; you've lost. They hated the 60's values and are on your side of the culture wars, but they didn't like how this was handled.
