There is mention on the Sierra Leone web page that the U.N. are
to become directly involved in bringing the parties to the peace
table. The occupation of Freetown I feel did have a silver lining
in that it has forced the Government of Sierra Leone to become more
receptive to working a deal with the Rebels. The Rebels on the other
hand realize that this was probably their last chance to overthrow the
Government and they have failed. They will also be more receptive
to talking peace in my opinion. The increased involvement of Sierra
Leone's neighbouring countries, the USA, and the UN in the peace
process was only intensified by what happened in Freetown. I feel
a peaceful settlement is just around the corner. How long it will
last is another matter.
