Well Ed, I will be different from you in your opinion. Do I care if MSFT loses - YES I do. Because I work in the industry and I can see how MSFT's abuse of their monopoly is hurting the potential of the industry. It stifles good technology from bubbling up and it slows progress. You wont understand what I am saying regarding MSFT's negative impact on the industry and ultimately on the consumer but trust me when I say that a healthier industry will be one where MSFT is put into its reins. I do not want to see MSFT crushed into non-existence, nor do I think that any remedial action in itself would destroy MSFT. But I feel if MSFT had its monopoly stripped from its warchest (i.e. by forcing MSFT to license its Windows source code to a couple other vendors) or by forcing MSFT's division that has the monopoly to be independant from the rest of their products, that the industry will be much healthier in the future.

What many of you dont understand and are making too many quick assumptions on is that MSFT will still be very healthy and successful if a breakup remediation were to occur. I think the opposite. MSFT is succuss in most part because of it hugely leveraging its monopoly of the desktop OS. If it were to lose that monopoly (i.e. if remediation were to restrict/control it or if Linux comes on like gangbusters and wrestles away MSFT's monopoly) it will have a lot of trouble being successful anymore. Think about it objectively for once. Look at all of MSFT's biggest successes and look at what was a major factor for that product being a success.

Many of you are not in the industry and may not see it, but if you are you will see that the vast majority of their product successes have had a big "compatibility with our Desktop OS - how bout our competitors products" imposed threat. Not said but implied strongly.

So, if MSFT lost its desktop monoploy either by court action or by natural evolution, MSFT will lose its biggest stick in making new products a big success.
