VTSS Article: Controlling the Jitters

Vitesse Redefines Gigabit Ethernet and Fibre Channel Product Line With the Velocity Family of CMOS ICs

February 16, 1999 08:28 AM
CAMARILLO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 16, 1999--Vitesse Semiconductor Corp. VTSS Tuesday announced that it is extending its world-class signal quality expertise into CMOS technology with the introduction of the Velocity family of ICs for Gigabit Ethernet, Fibre Channel and serial interconnect applications at speeds up to 1.25Gb/s.

The initial products of this soon-to-be-expanding family include the VSC7123 and VSC7133 10-bit transceivers for network switch, router, host adapter and serial backplane interconnect applications.

"Vitesse's success derives from delivering state-of-the-art communication semiconductors with exceptional jitter control. The Velocity family combines our accumulated design and test expertise with the latest CMOS processes to yield a new generation of gigabit- speed products with optimum price/performance," stated Fred Weniger, Vitesse's product marketing manager.

The VSC7123 and VSC7133 physical layer ICs represent the first in a family of devices that will ultimately include fully integrated system solutions for switches, hubs and high-end storage products.

These two fifth-generation devices provide the serializer/ deserializer (SERDES) function for 10-bit, 8B/10B encoded data between 1.0 and 1.25Gb/s. They feature excellent jitter tolerance, low jitter generation, cable equalization, reliable signal detection and reduced sensitivity to power-supply noise and reference-clock jitter.

These 3.3V ICs are available in industry-standard 10mm or 14mm 64-pin PQFP packages with dissipation under 650mW. The VSC7133 differs from the VSC7123 in that it accommodates either a TTL or a PECL reference-clock input to minimize jitter in distributed clocking systems.

Both ICs are fully compliant with Gigabit Ethernet IEEE 802.3z and Fibre Channel NCITS X3T11 specifications and are being premiered at the Vitesse booth during the Gigabit Ethernet Conference, at the Wyndham Hotel in San Jose, Calif. Production quantities are available now and are priced below $7 in quantities of 1,000.

Vitesse Semiconductor is a world leader in the design, development and manufacturing of high-bandwidth communications and Automatic Test Equipment (ATE) integrated circuits (ICs).

Vitesse has been a primary developer of Fibre Channel technology and a contributor to the NCITS X3T11 Fibre Channel committee, the Fibre Channel Association (FCA) and the Fibre Channel Loop Community (FCLC), as well as the Gigabit Ethernet Alliance (GEA). The company's products address the needs of telecommunications, data-communications and ATE equipment manufacturers that demand a combination of high speed, high complexity and low power dissipation.

Vitesse has headquarters in Camarillo and manufactures volume ICs at its two fabrication facilities, in Camarillo and Colorado Springs, Colo. Company/product information can be found on the Web at www.vitesse.com.
