I also have had very good luck with gateways. I have bought dell's and Microns and have had good luck with those as well. For someone to say XYZ company sucks because the CD, Disk or OS upgrade does not work is silly.. No box maker builds that equipment and it could fail just as easy in any makers box. Sounds more like a user problem to me then a hardware issue. If you think a win 98 upgrade is hard buy a UNIX box and try to install a modem...after that experience you will love your PC! I do own stock in both gtw and dell. Both are great Co's and will be building PC's for homes and offices for the foreseeable future.
