Dear Penni,

Yes, approximately, I am saying that I would prefer to be without sin before I cast the first or any other stone. If I were judge or jury, it would be another thing altogether. I would tell the magistrate picking the jury that I could not serve because of a conscientious incapacity to judge fairly. Murder I can judge. Theft I can judge. Perjury I have trouble with because I cannot measure anyone's else intent to lie. I cannot imagine Clinton would lie unless he was sure he could get a way with it. I may be wrong, but I can't imagine the people of the US would be so stupid as to elect a stupid crook.
I do not attempt to impose my reluctance on you -- I just suggest that true morality is yours to choose and (if you wish) defend. I too had sons (who never vote) and I taught them (I hope) a morality of courage and telling the truth. They never believed in politicians not because they were too cynical but because they understood that walking in slime would unavoidably get them dirty. I would not intrude, but if you have raised you children to look to adults for guidance, you have better help them choose someone safely dead like Socrates or Marcus or Jesus or Gautama as their guides. I'll admit that it is much safer and more profitable to follow successful politicians, but it is also much more subject to surprise. Societies never say anything. Only individual persons can have character, moral courage, personal sacrifice, and wisdom. These are dangerous traits to have.
I hope you feel much better soon.
