The "curb" is an old name for the AMEX because it started outside in the streets.The "street" brokers would use hand signals to the windows where their firms had offices.

If you go back really far to the mid 19th century there was a "street" exchange outside the NYSE.Brokers there would do a trade for you for 1/8 point comm.They were the first to trade all day.The NYSE only had two calls/day for stock.
