February 16, 1999 (SEOUL) -- The International Mobile Telecommunications 2000 service will debut as early as next year in Korea, said domestic mobile phone service operator SK Telecom. In preparation for the trial service in 2000, the Korean telecom company is planing to set up an asynchronous IMT-2000 service system, which will be delivered from Japan's NTT Mobile Communications Networks Inc. (NTT DoCoMo), in Pundang city in Kyunggi Province.
Also, SK Telecom, which has six million mobile phone subscribers so far this year, said it will spend US$15 billion won for developing various telecom equipment systems, including switching machines and wireless phone facilities.
