Subject: Modem Rate/Speed

As has been pointed out here many times, the stated "connected at" message a modem gives means nothing. Frequently, it's always (the message) the same regardless of connection, as it reflects the baud rate at which the modem is configured. My connection here at work, always says "connected at 1200 bps" but my best throughput rate is consisently in the high 30's. At home, with a direct line and not a LANS, the best throughput is much faster. Anyway, it's the throughput that matters not the rate measured at the exact time of connection.

I hope the guy(s) on which this article is based, knew the difference, as the article makes it seem like he couldn't get a fast connect with FNET. And whether they blame it on the AT&T lines or not, we don't want inaccurate negatives discussed in reference to our company, now do we?
