MIT's Technology Review has an article on Wavelength Division Multiplexing in the March/April 1999 issue. It contains an interesting quote from David Clark, senior research scientist at MIT's Laboratory for Computer Science, "The ability to get bits down a fiber is growing faster than Moore's Law". Clark notes the carrying capacity of fiber is doubling every 12 months.
