GOP screwed up by basing its impeachment prosecution almost entirely on "legal grounds." The country is tired of lawyerspeak and lawyer arguments and having the president prosecuted by 13 white male Republicans all between the ages of 45-55, several of whom also were involved in questionable sexual practices earlier in their lives. The public recognized that "legal grounds" was simply GOPspeak to avoid defending the underlying unethical basis for this witch hunt: partisan politics.

Where the GOP really screwed up, even more than failing to attain a majority in either article of impeachment, was in failing to follow up on its "Contract With America." Last year's do-nothing Congress had as much to do with what happened last November as did backlash from the Clinton impeachment.
