SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 7 (Reuter) - Intel Corp on Friday
unveiled a computer chip design that can run as fast as 400
megahertz, or twice as fast as its fastest chip in production
now.
At the International Solid State Circuits Conference in San
Francisco, the world's largest chipmaker demonstrated that the
fundamental design behind its top-of-the-line Pentium Pro can
run as fast as 400 megahertz, double the speed of today's
200-megahertz Pentium Pro.
Megahertz measures the chip's so-called clock speed, or the
number of times per second the chip can perform its
calculations and update the computer's operations. Generally,
the faster the megahertz rating, the faster a chip can
calculate.
Intel said using the same design and equipment used to make
today's Pentium Pro, it can make a chip that will run as fast
as 400 megahertz.
Later this year, Intel, based in Santa Clara, Calif., plans
to sell a chip that will run at 300 megahertz, Intel spokesman
Howard High said Thursday.
Intel and other chip companies showed off their advanced
designs at the ISSCC on Friday, a conference for electrical
engineers in the semiconductor industry.
