I agree with your entire post until you got to this part:

This is probably one of the acid tests to differentiate between a "conservative" and a"liberal". Where a conservative sees a criminal that should be punished for their crimes against society, the liberal sees a victim that was forced into their actions by society and as such, are not responsible for their crimes.


Sure there are some liberals who feel that way, but very few. Just like there are some conservatives that are hung up on the Bible and feel the constitution should be replaced with the 10 commandments. And there are the conservatives that feel that bombing abortion clinics is A-ok, and then there are the conservative senators that quietly applaud this behavior while encouraging their ex-wives to have abortions in their personal lives. Extremism from any side is better avoided.... but there are more extremist republicans than extremist liberals these days - its been a long time since the liberals have let radicals dictate their agenda.
