SB,
Taking differences and ratios of percentages was a neat trick! Where did you learn that?
Anyway, let's correctly calculate the percentage loss each year, so that we do not make a trend out of a single sample point (that statistics course is still highly recommended).
Ignoring market growth during the Q4 and always denoting the entire market by S in the respective year:
In '96, DELL lost 0.003S market share starting from .047S, i.e. 6.38% loss. And, in '97, DELL lost 0.002S market share starting from .062S, i.e. 3.22% loss. And, in '98, DELL lost 0.007S market share starting from .091S, i.e. 7.69% loss.
So, '98 doesn't look that bad from '96, eh! And '97 looks like a special case, which you of course chose to compare with, to make a trend out of a special case.
Better luck next time!
