Jimleon: There's a whirlwind centering around the Telecommunications /Internet Telephony market. MCI is now offering combined Voice/data applications to use immediately in its Intranet operations on the east coast. This is nothing new in stating that charges are being looked at the Internet use in both data and upcomng voice. Yes, all of your RBOC's regional bell operating companies are screaming at the FCC to do something about this use on their lines, but instead? Companies like MCI are shutting their perverbal mouths, and doing something about it. MCI has a technology called VAULT which it plans to unveil later this year. Its Intranet operations will use this voice/date/fax that will better manage its Intranets. ****This "vault" will serve as a bridge between the Internet and the switched public telephone network, converting traffice into the Internet Protocol packets that travel over MCI's backbone.****
No way in hell is the FCC going anywhere near this. They may monitor the Internet charges (try to get prices up) to have less congestion on the Net and (work on alternatives) but to feed the frenzy here by the FCC would be nuts.
The local bells are the ones that are really complaining about the use, but I don't think it will even put a kink in all this armour we have going.
No way a monopoly on voice will ever happen and I think charges will be set aside because the large roll the Bell's will have and everyone will be happy making tons of money which ever way you slice the pie!
