A look at the portfolio makes it clear that the authors were good at picking present gorillas, but not so good at picking emerging gorillas.

Lucius,

The authors' theory about buying a basket of gorilla candidates inherently acknowledges that it is very difficult to pick the right company. That's why they promote buying a basket of gorilla wannabes and gradually narrowing down the field as the real gorilla emerges. If they buy a basket of four gorilla candidates the authors are acknowledging that three of the four initial picks will be dropped.
