Gary,

By abuse, I meant that a lot of businesses that used to send large data files by modem from one computer (let's say in California) to another computer (let's say somewhere in Asia) are now sending the same information over the internet and saving huge amounts of money on long distance telephone bills. A friend of mine who works at a major architecture said that his firm now sends architectural plans all over the world this way. The cost of such activity is being shouldered by the rest of us who experience system slowdowns while huge files wend their way through the network.

While it was nice to read today that CSCO, STRM and ASND are working on ways to speed things up, I fear that this will be analogous to what eventually happens when wider highways are constructed. The speed advantage is eventually eroded by more and more people who are encouraged to drive. The only longterm solution to preventing this abuse is to somehow charge people based to the size of files being transmitted. I wish it could be otherwise but I don't see how.
