You're kidding, right? There were literally hundreds of ISP alternatives to AOL, many more then there are broker alternatives. Yet not only did AOL not lose customers to them, they gained market share. Go read the "best online broker" thread, and you'll quickly learn there is no "perfect" broker. E-Trade may not be the best, but it certainly isn't the worst of the bunch. Best service doesn't win anyway, best marketing does, otherwise we'd all be watching videos on our Betamax VCR's.
