Just to make it more confusing I'll put my two cents in on your monitor config problem. I tried to configure an original (PCI) Matrox millennium card with a phoenix maxi gamer card, at the same time did windows 98 upgrade on older pentium 150. I went through all the driver upgrades (most current) and was still having some problems with printing from browser IE4. Decided I'd call Microsoft and they diagnosed a driver problem (GPF). Took out the matrox card and the problem went away! Sent an e-mail to their (Matrox) tech support a week a go and havn't heard anything. Conclusion, although Matrox says they do Multi monitor, I don't think they have all the bugs worked out. That or their tech support is in a different time zone!
I struggled with all the same problems you are having trying to config with two cards. try taking the matrox out and see if the two ati's like each other than. Remember matrox has only one driver for their cards.
good luck... DaveU
