Michelle, did you not read my post on the flat tax? It was directed to you. To recapitulate, most conservatives favor a vat or a flat tax, or a tax with mild progressivity (in one or two steps), and the elimination of all tax preferences. This is called "tax simplification", and it means that most conservatives do not, in fact, favor the use of the tax code for social engineering, certainly not in the long run.
