David - Re:" Intel & S3"

Early last spring, Intel announced the "development" of a new interface for graphics memory, the AGP - Advanced Graphics Port.

The purpose of this was to provide a faster bus (faster than the PCI bus) for 3D graphics, VRML, and other very high end graphic intensive applications as found on Workstations.

At the time of the announcement, Intel acknowledged that they were working with Lockheed-Martin to make an extremely high speed 3 dimensional graphics processor based on an existing multi-board design of Locheed-Martin's, used in their own workstations. Chips & Technology was mentioned as a partner in this endeavor.

The AGP and high end 3D processor being developed by Lockheed/Intel/Chips are targeted at Pentium Pro (I guess that now includes Klamath) systems, chip sets, etc.

The product is targeted at the high end workstation market where performance is the key word, and not cost.

S3 has targeted the mainstream video and graphics market for 7 or 8 years - high performance at reasonable price points. I would doubt that the Intel/Lockheed/Chips device will be targeted at the normal business and home user.

I would assume, therefore, that S3 is not in too big a danger. They are rapidly developing their own Virge/Virge 3D chips so they seem to have things under control.
