I'm highly skeptical of the "lets loft [planes/balloons/blimps/guy with a megaphone]"--- until someone demonstrates an automated device up in the air for 24 hours under its own control, I doubt it is viable.

There's too much that can go on in terms of weather, errant jetliners, poorly written pilot software, that it doesn't seem like one would be able to provide reliable 24/7 service like this anytime soon.

And I wonder if the FAA will let any company put these things up over major cities...

But that's just my opinion. Sats are well understood. Poletops can be easily reached. These medium altitude things have neither of those advantages.

I could be wrong.
