Internet Media Enters Internet Telephony Market; Internet-Enabled Calling is First Foray Into E-Commerce Business Wire - February 17, 1999 07:18 BATON ROUGE, La.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 17, 1999--Internet Media Corporation (OTC BB: USRF) (pronounced "you surf"), owner of CyberHighway and developer of a low-cost, high-speed Wireless Internet technology, announced today that it has obtained, from a privately-held Dallas company, the right to distribute a line of newly-developed Internet-enabled telecommunications services, including a pre-paid, long-distance "virtual-calling-card". These Internet Telephony products will be distributed under private label brand names of Internet Media.
The virtual calling card service, developed by Woodcomm, Inc., is relatively simple. Subscribers select a contact name from his on-line address book, then clicks on that name, and the service connects his personal phone line and the contact's phone line, the connection being carried over Woodcomm's network, a portion of which traverses the Internet backbone in a manner that is transparent to users. This virtual-calling-card service will be available for use to all U.S. telephone numbers.
Under the same agreement, Internet Media will also begin to market an additional e-commerce product which connects customers of a particular company from that company's web site to a predetermined telephone number (sales, customer service and technical support, etc.) with a click of a button. Importantly, any business with a web site is a potential user of this Internet-enabled telecommunications service.
"These Internet telephony products have met our high standards for quality and value to our customers," said David Loflin Internet Media's president. "Our first order of business will be to offer all 26,000 CyberHighway customers the opportunity to enjoy the convenience and competitive pricing of the virtual calling card service.
"We believe that these and other innovative products presented by Internet Media and CyberHighway to meet specific customer needs will, in conjunction with the expansion of our wireless Internet access business, further our efforts in becoming the newest form of utility business--that is, the first '21st' Century Internet Service Provider (ISP)," one that is wireless, dependable and fast, and which also facilitates our customers' growing e-commerce efforts."
Internet Media's CyberHighway subsidiary is a full-service ISP, offering its service directly and through licensees to residential and business customers in over 80 markets.
