Is this too simple? Yes and no. You are assuming all other things being equal, but clearly they are not. For example interest rates have decreased and the S&P multiple has increased substantially, both of which would move valuations higher.

Then, there are business-specific issues, such as aggressive moves in China and Brazil, and expansion of Dell's high-end enterprise offerings. Since markets are foreward-looking, these would tend to increase valuations.

On the negative side we have seen slowing revenue growth throughout the year (not just this quarter). The markets are reacting today as if this had not been anticipated.
