I don't think the options package is that big of a deal. These execs have to purchase the shares when they exercise their options; if their old options have an exercise price of $12 then they are currently worthless. Granting them options at or below the current price allows them to exercise and sell shares if they need the cash; all the same it's always in their interest to have a strong stock price if they are being paid in stock or options, so their interests do correspond with ours.

Disney was in rough financial shape some years back, and a number of full time employees got paid with stock options because cash was in short supply; it was needed for company operations. It was certainly in the interest of all those Disney employees to have their shares go up in price, and when Eisner turned the company around he made a lot of people a lot of money.
