Digital Technology On FCC's Agenda Today
May 9, 1996
Today, the Federal Communications Commission is expected to propose digital television standards that would help open the door to sharper TV pictures, more programming and the ability to deliver computer data over television.
Digital technology would offer large-screen high-resolution displays and compact-disc-quality sound, as well a 19 megabit-per-second pipeline of data into the home. That pipeline would allow consumers to download information from the Internet through their TV set.
Consumers "will get a lot more than dazzling pictures and terrific sound," said Robert Graves, chairman of the Advanced Television Systems Committee, a standards-making body made up of about 50 corporations, trade groups and institutions.
The proposed standard also would affect digital video compression technology allowing broadcasters to pack anywhere from two to six programs over a single channel.
In November, the advisory panel recommended the standard to the FCC after testing high-definition TV technology. The panel included representatives from the entertainment, broadcast, computer, and electronic industries, among others.
The FCC is expected to issue the plan for public comment.
Good luck to all,
