1. As a TD shareholder you have already benefited by any Waterhouse IPO. The anticipation of such an event has been what has causing TD stock to rise lately. Whether TD shareholders would actually get any Waterhouse shares is unknown. (unlikely, in my opinion.) If not, TD itself would retain a good % of Waterhouse (like 80%), and TD shares might go up more if the IPO did well.

2. Purchase of TD by MER or another big US broker or bank is indeed an interesting idea. Unfortunately, current Canadian law prohibits anyone (including MER) from buying more than 10% of any of the big Canadian banks, including TD. I have always hoped this law would be changed. If it were, I feel TD and the other Canadian banks would immediately become takeover targets.
