I was wondering if there is a relation between heads and media? The recent announcements of RDRT making an areal density record seemed to be joined with advances at HMT. This makes me wonder if it's possible that media and heads have a relationship, and if so, IBM will be supplying a large portion of WD's future heads which would indicate Komag would need to work, perhaps, more closly with IBM in the future???

Doesn't really make sense, but thought I'd like to know just in case.

On the surface, it looks like a good deal for Komag, but then what are they really buying when there's too much capacity in media anyway, and probably the capital expenses to bring along WD's operations are too high anyway. The answer would seem that they are simply buying a fixed percentage of WD's future business and they are buying it with unrecorded stock that won't be payable for several years. A good deal?

I would suppose it depends on whether WD survives as an independent company, or at all.

Thanks,

Mark
