Maybe I missed something here Neil, but for the residential user
virtually every dialup session has to go through the RBOCS. It doesn't
matter if AOL,AT&T worldnet,Mindspring or whoever else is providing
internet access. As for the CLECs, even accounting for business customers, they have less than 5% of the US local market. But I
do agree that they have to move and the RBOCs are very cautious
with their implementation of new technology - too cautious sometimes.
One thing you can be sure of though; when they go to full deployment
the service will be highly reliable.
