Does anyone know how much influence the Japanese Electronics Industry
Association (the home of VSAC) has on Japanese companies? I've looked
around the web a bit and not found to much on them. However, I did
find their web page: eiaj.or.jp
and a news page eiaj.or.jp that
has a blurp on VSAC eiaj.or.jp

I don't know much about Japanese business, but it seems like a real
kudo that we were able to "inside" ...

EIAJ Established Venture System LSI Assist Center (VSAC)

TOKYO, JUNE 10, 1998 ... Large-scale integration circuits (LSIs) are being used in a variety of areas, including information and telecommunications equipment, medical equipment, control systems and electronic equipment for automobiles. System LSIs, however, are fast gaining attention in the electronics industry because they offer superior capabilities in rapidly processing numerous functions. These LSIs are also more compact, lighter and consume less voltage than LSIs.

Originality and creativity are two indispensable elements in designing and developing System LSIs. In the United States, where new businesses are emerging, System LSI technologies are flourishing as venture and small to medium-sized companies are making use of System LSIs to expand into new business fields. It has also been an urgent task
for Japan to encourage local venture and small to medium-sized companies to actively get involved in designing and developing System LSIs in order to maintain and raise their competitiveness in this area.

In this environment, on June 1, 1998, the Electronic Industries Association of Japan (EIAJ) established the Venture System LSI Assist Center (VSAC) to support venture and small/medium-sized companies in developing System LSIs. The center is supported by the Small and Medium Enterprise Agency, the Ministry of International Trade and
Industry and the National Federation of Small Business Associations (based in Minato-ku, Tokyo) with cooperation from semiconductor manufacturers and companies involved in electronic design automation (EDA). Full-scale operation is scheduled to start in October this year.

Operations of the center are outlined as attached.

Venture System LSI Assist Center (VSAC)

Subjects: Individuals and venture and small/medium-sized companies interested in acquiring technologies for System LSI development and design

Activities:
1.Training by the center's specialists on specification writing, logic configuration, logic verification, layout design and layout verification.

2.Production of System LSI prototypes via the multi-chip method (stacking more than one users' designs on one wafer). (Support is at a fixed rate for small/medium-sized companies.)

3.Evaluation of System LSI prototypes

4.Holding Symposia on CAE and CAD tools

Note: In principle, users retain intellectual property rights.
