I agree, except that @home did need deep pockets to handle the debt of their high-cost buildup. AT&T provided some of that along with the cable companies that are its partners in @home now. And I agree that AT&T desperately needed the last mile -- the connection to the home that they get with TCI and with the Time-Warner partnership.

And I also agree that AOL has no need for the last mile (which is why a merger or purchase of @home, even if it were possible, would make no sense). AOL is wisely hedging its bets, but its brightest future seems to be as a media company. The deal between AT&T/TCI and Seattle indicates one of the ways AOL might be able catch a ride on broadband: AT&T@home becomes the ISP, but AOL is available as a value-added media option.
