I think a lot of the reason Intel pre-announced the 300 MHz parts is to stall the market from adopting the AMD K6 for workstations and servers. They aren't as concerned about the consumer market. AMD will have some major announcements and demonstrations in conjunction with some major OEMs at CeBit '97 on March 13th that should send quivers down to Intel's toes. Where the high end goes, the low-mid end usually follows.
